TE-ONEROA-O-TOHE "The long beach of Tohe"
Located on the North Island of New Zealand, 90 Mile Beach is a beautiful, unbroken stretch of white sand that actually runs for 64 miles, along the Tasman Sea. When you stand on this beach you do feel as if you are looking into infinity.....nothing but beach and ocean as far as the eye can see, in both directions.
Tour buses will take you on drives along this beach. We were told that the beach is considered to part of the highway system and speeds are monitiored by radar. Because of the dangerous currents of the Tasman Sea here, swimming is not allowed on this beach, which is located too far away from any towns for rescue teams to be able to arrive in time to be of any help.
I do not remember why the beach became known as 90 Mile Beach when it is 26 miles shorter than that, but perhaps one of my Kiwi friends can refresh my memory.
I took this picture, last February with my Kodak Easy Share CX6330 camera.
